The Kuwait Association for the Care of Children in Hospital (KACCH), has been committed to changing the face of paediatric wards in hospitals across Kuwait for over 25 years. In the years since the very first hospital playroom opened in the Amiri hospital in 1989, more than 500,000 children in the Kuwaiti community have benefited from the support of the KACCH Child Life Programmes. Today, KACCH administers six Child Life Programmes in government hospitals across Kuwait. KACCH staff work closely with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professional to reduce the negative impact of hospitalisation and create a positive experience for sick children and their families. KACCH Child Life Programmes are led by qualified Child Life Specialists and Play Leaders, each of them contributing an exceptional level of dedication and expertise. KACCH Child Life Specialists are non-medical paediatric healthcare professionals who are trained to help children and their families manage stressful health care experiences. They are experts in child development and their primary role is to promote effective coping through play, preparation, education and self-expression. They are considered key members of the hospital clinical team and continually advocate for family centered care by focusing on the psychosocial needs of the child and family. KACCH Play Leaders support the Child Life Specialists by providing a variety of play activities that are specifically tailored developmentally to suit each child. The play leaders implement daily play sessions, which include art and craft activities that engage and entertain children and their families, creating a fun and supportive environment that is warm and healing in the KACCH playrooms and other areas in the hospital where children are treated. KACCH is committed to ensuring that in the future the support of dedicated Child Life Specialists and Play Leaders will become the standard in paediatric healthcare across the Middle East.
